Shop Day at Depuy's Spring Creek

Shop Day at Depuy's Spring Creek

Nothing teaches a new rodsmith the ins and outs of a TMR rod design than a day of technical fishing on the famed water's of Depuy's Spring Creek in SW Montana.

We filled the trucks with a full quiver of rods that included 8' 6" 5 weights, 9' 4 weights, our one-piece bamboo and others. Friend of TMR and Montana outfitter Zach Petrich met us to show us around, cast some rods, and enjoy his day off too. We were met with temps in the 80's, no wind and bluebird skies. For those familiar with the creeks, you know how difficult our day was about to be.

Despite the conditions, we found happy fish that were actively eating nymphs under the service and the occasional dry fly. We were up to it and ready to fish 6x and size 20 flies. At the end of the day, all of us hooked fish and a couple were even landed. We joked how Tom would have been proud to see his rods being fished exactly how he designed them - close quarters and protecting light tippet.

Even though the fishing was tough, we got to soak up some Montana sunshine, tell stories over a cold beer, and learn more about what makes a TMR a TMR.
